Check what is included
Ask for a written description of the work, the main materials or fittings, labour, VAT, waste removal and any making good. If diagnosis is still required, ask which part of the price is fixed and which part could change.
For bathroom or installation work, confirm who supplies each item and who is responsible for tiling, electrical work, decoration and disposal of old fittings.
Check the business and the person
Verify the business name, contact details and insurance. Ask about relevant experience for the specific job. Where work involves gas, check the individual engineer on the Gas Safe Register and confirm that their ID card covers that category of work.
Do not rely only on a badge, directory listing or review score. Government guidance recommends understanding how recommendation sites operate and making your own checks before appointing a trader.
Agree timing and payment
Confirm when work can begin, the expected duration and how delays will be handled. For larger jobs, agree sensible payment stages linked to progress rather than paying the whole amount upfront.
Ask how long the quote remains valid and whether a cancellation period applies. Keep the quote, agreed changes and payment receipts.
Six questions to ask
- Is this a fixed quote or an estimate?
- Exactly what work and materials are included?
- Does the total include VAT, travel and waste removal?
- What could make the price change?
- Who will carry out the work and what qualifications are required?
- What are the proposed start date, duration and payment terms?
